Description
Sounderground – a writing workshop where the inspiration comes from song lyrics.
Join Andrew Lambeth for a winter’s evening writing workshop in the elegant comfort of The Leeds Library. This is a writing workshop with a very unusual added dimension – the themes are prompted by music, by carefully chosen songs whose lyrics also happen to read as good poetry on the printed page.
Each participant is given a hand-bound pamphlet of the lyrics to read while the recordings are played. With both senses engaged, ears and eyes working in tandem before each writing opportunity, participants at earlier Soundergrounds have found that an unusual rhythmic and melodic release of inspiration occurs. That sudden silence when the music stops is richly primed.
Try it. In previous Soundergrounds, more than one prize-winning piece of writing has been written straight into that open space. It’s perfect for poetry but it’s not just for poets – any creative writing, whether flash fiction, personal memoir, or even notebook ideas for longer fiction, can take off from the Sounderground.
Andrew Lambeth is a poet, a typographer, a book-maker, and an editor at Strix magazine, the Leeds-based journal of poetry and short fiction.
Tickets are £8. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Workshop starts promptly at 6pm-9pm.
