Paranormal Investigations at The Leeds Library

Step inside one of the most atmospheric buildings in Leeds and discover a library with a story—or two—to tell…

Founded in 1768, the Leeds Library is the oldest subscription library of its kind in the UK. With centuries of history woven into its walls, it’s no surprise that this remarkable building has also become the subject of many ghostly tales and unexplained occurrences.

Over the years, staff and visitors have reported shadowy figures between the shelves, echoing footsteps in empty rooms, mysterious voices, and strange sounds after dark. These stories date back to the Victorian era and continue right up to the present day.

We welcome established paranormal investigation groups for exclusive, after-hours access to the library. Investigations take place when the building is closed to members and the public, giving groups the chance to explore most areas of this historic space in peace and quiet. Each visit includes an introductory tour of the building and its paranormal past; use of our Events Space as a base; and an on-site duty manager throughout the night.

Investigations are available on Fridays or Saturdays, with a choice of set packages or bespoke options by arrangement. Groups must bring their own equipment and have appropriate insurance, and all visits are arranged directly with the library. We do not offer bookings via third parties.

Whether you’re drawn by the famous Victorian ghost story of former librarian Vincent Thomas Sternberg, or by more recent reports of unexplained activity, a paranormal investigation at the Leeds Library offers a unique and memorable experience in the heart of the city.

We are open to groups sharing a booking, as long as tickets are not sold publicly and the relevant liability insurance is in place.
