Members Only – The Book Club @ The Leeds Library

by The Leeds Library

Description

Our next Book Club is on Tuesday 16th November at 6pm, Afterlives by Abdulrazak Gurnah (2021)

Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2021

Restless, ambitious Ilyas was stolen from his parents by the Schutzruppe askari, the German colonial troops; after years away, he returns to his village to find his parents gone, and his sister Afiya given away.

Hamza was not stolen, but was sold; he has come of age in the schutztruppe, at the right hand of an officer whose control has ensured his protection but marked him for life.

‘Riveting and heartbreaking … A compelling novel, one that gathers close all those who were meant to be forgotten, and refuses their erasure’ Maaza Mengiste, Guardian

Copies are available to borrow from the collection.

We are intending for this event to be in person in the Library but if that’s not possible for whatever reason then we’ll  Zoom our discussion on Tuesday 16th November at 6pm and if you would like to join that discussion (or the Book Club) then please email me: gellf@theleedslibrary.org.uk.

Further dates: Monday 13th December, 6pm, Thin Air by Michelle Paver

The Leeds Library offers all Members the choice of two book clubs to join. One meets monthly on a Monday evening and the other meets monthly on a Tuesday morning. Currently both meet on Zoom but we hope that will change back to in person meetings in the Library in the coming months. Read more here.
