Description
Caryl Phillips was born in St Kitts and grew up in Leeds. Now a Professor of English at Yale University, he’s internationally acclaimed for his novels, essays and play scripts. He’s also a patron of the Leeds Library, so we are delighted to be hosting this exciting event where Caryl will be reading from his latest novel, Another Man Man in the Street, and engaging in a conversation with University of Leeds’ Professor John McLeod.
This important novel has already been interpreted in different ways. It has been read as the unhappy story of a man who moved to London from the Caribbean in 1962. It has also been seen as an investigation into the traumas experienced by migrants to London from the Caribbean, from Poland, and from Sheffield.
London, as we know, is quite different from Leeds. The novel invites us to question the ‘Windrush Generation’ trope while providing unprecedented insight into the lives a wide variety of unsettled Londoners.
Please join us to engage with one of the foremost cultural commentators of our time, who happens also to be an enthusiast for the city that (partially) formed him.
Signed copies of Another Man on the Street will be available for sale.
