About The Next Chapter Project
The Leeds Library is a unique cultural and heritage gem, which over generations has championed the written word in all of its forms and has been a centre for creativity and creative thought in Leeds. The Next Chapter Project will see the Library expand from its current premises on Commercial Street into our neighbouring building.
This exciting expansion will enable accessibility to the existing Library building through the installation of a lift and more bathroom facilities. It will also work to improve the presentation and access of the collections of the Library, and develop our work as a cultural and literary hub for the city and improving the financial sustainability of the Library.

This expansion will secure the future of the Library, establishing its significance on the high street and engaging a wider group of visitors in the evolution of the Library from its radical roots to its work as a charity; embracing and preserving its rich history for all to enjoy, whilst inviting current generations to contribute to our future.
As a charity, we depend on funding, donations and membership subscriptions to continue our great work and we have launched the Next Chapter fundraising appeal to help us bring our vision for our wonderful library to life. We need your help to achieve this and to keep The Leeds Library at the heart of the city’s cultural life.

How you can support us
The Leeds Library is a welcoming and unique space for people of all ages to come together to read, learn and rejoice in the magic of books and storytelling. Our new building project will mean that the Library is fully accessible to all visitors for the first time in its long history, and the Library is committed to providing a warm welcome to everyone who visits.
By donating today, your support will help us create an accessible and contemporary space to welcome visitors and members old and new; add new books to the Library’s collection; preserve and care for our beloved historic books; digitise our unique archive and enable us to share it with audiences locally, nationally and internationally; develop outreach programmes to engage with local schools and community groups; maintain our beautiful Grade II* listed Georgian building and so much more.
Be part of our next chapter and help us secure the future of The Leeds Library.
