Scalarama Leeds 2022 Presents: Read Between the Lines: Cast a Dark Shadow

by The Leeds Library

Description

Scalarama Leeds Film Festival 2022 invites you to a special film screening at The Leeds Library.

Join us in the atmospheric Leeds Library for an overlooked British noir, starring Dirk Bogarde as a ruthless fortune-hunter with a penchant for older women—and murder!

Screen icon Bogarde stars in an early queer-coded role as Edward ‘Teddy’ Bare, an unscrupulous schemer who bumps off his much older wife for her money. But things go awry, and Teddy must find another wealthy widow to marry. Unfortunately for him, sassy landlady Frieda (Margaret Lockwood) is more than a match for his villainous wiles.

From the director of Alfie! and Educating Rita, this is a skilfully crafted, darkly camp slice of film noir that deserves to be seen.

“A thoroughly polished job of civilised homicide” – New York Times
