Doctors, Surgeons and Infirmaries: Medical Care in Leeds, from the Georgian Period to the Present Day
Description
In a new partnership, The Leeds Library and students from the University of Leeds Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Healthcare join forces to explore the history and evolution of medicine and healthcare in Leeds, from the Georgian Infirmary to contemporary practice.
In an evening of illustrated lectures and discussions, join President of The Leeds Library, Dr Kevin Grady, as he delves into the history of Leeds to examine the beginnings of modern medicine in the city, using historic documents and pictures from the Library’s collection to illustrate his lecture. To complement this, medical experts from The Worsley Times, the University of Leeds’s online medical journal, will speak about their experiences of modern practice and their thoughts on the future of healthcare in the city.

About The Leeds Library
The Leeds Library is the oldest-surviving members’ subscription library in the UK. Founded in 1768, the Library moved to its current purpose-built premises on Commercial Street in 1808, and many original features remain in this much-loved home.
From the Georgian splendour of the Main Room, with its Victorian sunlight burners, to the labyrinthian basement deep under Commercial Street, there is an unexpected treasure around every corner.
About The Worsley Times
The Worsley Times is a medical newspaper written by students, for students. Covering a variety of topics, from current cutting-edge research to how to manage anxiety at university, it also has study tips and revision guides from both students and qualified health care professionals.
A note about accessibility – Unfortunately, our Grade II* listed building is not currently fully accessible. We have a stair lift from the ground floor foyer to the first floor but are unable to install a through-floor lift due to the building’s historic status. Please email us on enquiries@theleedslibrary.org.uk if you have any questions around access, and we will do everything that we can to accommodate you.
The Leeds Library is committed to making its building and collections accessible to everyone in our current capital building works project The Next Chapter Project. To find out more, please visit the website HERE.
