One of the best-loved and most vibrant spoken word nights in Yorkshire, Chelping has brought internationally renowned poets to Leeds’ now 251-year-old library. Guest spoken word artists have included Joelle Taylor, Sabrina Mahfouz, Theresa Lola, Cecilia Knapp,Toby Campion and Victoria McNulty.
Our November event will feature sets from Molly Naylor and Joe Williams, plus open mic slots.Tickets cost £6 (includes admin and booking fee) and are available via the Eventbrite link. Doors open at 7pm.
MOLLY NAYLOR
Molly Naylor is a poet, scriptwriter, performer and director who works across a range of mediums. She is the co-writer and creator of Sky One comedy After Hours. Theatre credits include Whenever I Get Blown Up I Think Of You, My Robot Heart and LIGHTS! PLANETS! PEOPLE!. Her debut poetry collection Badminton is published by Burning Eye. She is the co-director of True Stories Live.
JOE WILLIAMS
Joe Williams is an award-winning writer and performing poet from Leeds. He tells tales about lost love, people in pubs, and the best ways to insult footballers in Spanish. His debut poetry pamphlet, Killing the Piano, was published by Half Moon Books in September 2017, followed in November 2018 by the verse novella An Otley Run, which was shortlisted for Best Novella in the 2019 Saboteur Awards.
His poems and short stories have been included in numerous anthologies, and in magazines online and in print. He won the Open Mic Competition at Ilkley Literature Festival in 2017, and was runner-up the following year. Despite all of that, he is probably most widely read thanks to being published in Viz magazine.
OPEN MIC
There are 6 open mic slots available on a first come, first served basis. Once these slots have been filled, there’ll be a reserve list. All open mic slots are a maximum of 5 minutes, and can be reserved by emailing Matt Abbott at eyup@mattabbottpoet.com
