Chelping @ The Leeds Library

Description

One of the best-loved and most vibrant spoken word nights in Yorkshire, Chelping has brought internationally renowned poets to Leeds’ now 251-year-old library. Guest spoken word artists have included Joelle Taylor, Sabrina Mahfouz, Theresa Lola, Cecilia Knapp and Toby Campion.

Our July event will feature sets from Victoria McNulty and Jamie Thrasivoulou, plus open mic slots.

Tickets cost £6 (includes admin and booking fee) and are available via the Eventbrite link. Doors open at 7pm.

VICTORIA McNULTY

Victoria McNulty is a poet and spoken word artist from Glasgow. She is the Sonnet Youth Slam Champion and has performed across the UK including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Evidently Salford,  Feile an Phobail and the BBC 6 music festival.  Her critically claimed pamphlet and show Conefessionals was published by Speculative Books in 2017.

JAMIE THRASIVOULOU

Jamie Thrasivoulou is a writer, poet and educator from Derby. Silhouette Press published his debut collection The Best Of A Bad Situation in 2017. His next collection Our Man is forthcoming through Burning Eye Books in July 2019.

In 2018 Jamie was winner of the Culture Matters: Bread and Roses award for Spoken Word that contributes to the working class narrative. His work won in three separate categories of the 2019 Saboteur awards including ‘Best Spoken Word Performer in the UK.’ He also won best collaborative work for ‘Man Up’ a project he worked on in 2018 with Restoke. ‘Word Wise’ The night Jamie produces in Derby won ‘Best Regular Spoken Word event’. Jamie is the official poet for Derby County Football Club where he has recited poetry to crowds of over 34,000 people. His poem ‘We Are Derby’ is played on the big screen before every home game at Pride Park stadium and was played in the pre-match build-up at the 2019 EFL playoff final at Wembley Stadium.

Open mic

There are 6 open mic slots available, and each slot is to last no longer than 5 minutes. These can be reserved on a first come, first served basis by emailing Matt Abbott at eyup@mattabbottpoet.com.
