A Thousand Words: Writing Poems from Local History

by The Leeds Library

Description

This workshop will explore writing poems inspired by The Leeds Library and The Thoresby Society’s collection of photographs of Leeds. Intended for all levels of experience in creative writing, we’ll discover the stories just waiting to be told, in the way only you can tell them.

It’s not essential, but you may wish to explore photos of places you know (or places you don’t) before the session, including for instance Leeds Libraries’ digital collection leodis.net.

If you like, you can also bring photos of your own to share with the group and to use as inspiration.

This workshop is a fundraiser to support the Leeds Library.

Ian Harker is a poet and editor. An Honorary Fellow of Leeds Trinity University, he was shortlisted for the inaugural Tempest Prize from New Writing North, judged by Andrew McMillan and Patience Agbabi, selected as one of Ilkley Lit Fest’s New Northern Poets for 2024, and in 2025 was a winner of the Poetry Business International Book and Pamphlet Competition, judged by Kim Moore.
