With a bewildering number of resources at your disposal, and a growing number of ways to access information, starting your family tree and growing it with rich – and correct – information can be a challenge.

In this session, professional genealogists Anne Mealia and Jane Sheehan give an overview of the different resources available to those researching their family tree and give hints and tips based on their wealth of experience in piecing together the ongoing story of your family and your ancestors.

Whether you’ve been researching your family history for some time or interested in making a start, this session is for you.

Please note that Anne and Jane will be unable to answer questions relating to specific queries or problems during the session; but if you send your queries in advance of the session to enquiries@theleedslibrary.org.uk, these will be used to develop the themes of the talk.

Anne Mealia is a professional genealogist and historical researcher and has been running her own business, Evergreen Ancestry, for ten years. She has an MA in History and a Higher Certificate in Genealogy and is a member of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA). She has carried out research for Who Do You Think You Are and was Archives Researcher for the Channel 4 documentary The Queen’s Lost Family. Jane Sheehan is a graduate of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) gaining the Higher Certificate in Genealogy in 2016 and in the following year the Diploma in Genealogy with distinction – the first ever distinction for the Diploma awarded by the Institute. Jane subsequently established her own family history research business. She is a member of both the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA) and of the Register of Qualified Genealogists (RQG). She has also been a Tutor at IHGS for six years. Prior to qualifying as a professional genealogist, she received a MSc in Information Studies (with distinction), and worked for several years in the libraries of the BBC and the Press Association, and then in local government. janesheehanfamilyhistory.co.uk
