Description
Delve into the darker side of the city with The Leeds Library
This newly devised walking tour explores the spookier side of a bustling city.
Storyteller Matthew Bellwood will be your guide to the dark tales lurking around every corner of the streets you thought you knew.
From the Victorian lady seen in the bar of the City Varieties Music Hall to Mary Bateman, the ‘Yorkshire Witch’ and notorious poisoner who was hanged at York, to the mysterious Beast of Butts Court, this walk around the centre of Leeds takes you through the arcades and alleyways of a city where the past – and maybe a spook or two – are never far away.
The tours have been developed and delivered with the kind support of Leeds Inspired and directed by Alison Andrews from theatre company A Quiet Word.
Accessibility
Meet in the foyer of The Leeds Library on Commercial Street (not to be confused with Leeds Central Library next to the Town Hall). The tour takes approximately 80 minutes. Most of the walk takes place outdoors, so make sure to dress for the weather.
