Description
Especially for the Leeds LitFest, Peter Hain will talk about his book ‘A Pretoria Boy’ which is the powerful and timely story of his political life fighting South African apartheid and modern-day corruption. Peter has had a dramatic 50-year political career, in Britain and his native South Africa. A Pretoria Boy is the story of that extraordinary journey, from Pretoria to the House of Lords. After organising militant anti-Springbok demonstrations he became ‘Public Enemy Number One’ in the South African media. Narrowly escaping jail for disrupting all-white South African sports tours, he was framed for bank robbery and nearly assassinated by a bomb. ‘A Pretoria Boy’, is full of new, never-before-told stories, including conversations with MI5 around the 1970 Miss World contest and considers the issues in South Africa then and now, revealing Peter’s pivotal role in the exposure of Jacob Zuma’s corruption and downfall. Peter will be in conversation with poet and author James Nash. This event is part of the LitFest Boundaries season.
