Robert Dennis Chantrell (1793-1872) added galleries to the Main Room. He was paid 7 guineas for his work on the addition of the eastern one constructed in 1821 and 6 guineas for the northern and western galleries added in 1836. He had been the pupil of Sir John Soane and is particularly remembered for his work on Yorkshire churches – including the rebuilding of Leeds Parish Church – and for buildings such as the Philosophical Hall (1819-1820).
